Greetings fellow Eagle Scouts:
This is my first journal as President of NESA. I have served on the NESA committee, with a focus on scholarships, for the last 9 years. It is an honor, albeit a bittersweet one, to follow in the footsteps of Steve Fossett. The entire committee misses his enthusiasm for Scouting.
I am a long-time Scouter. My father was raised on a farm in Clay Center, Kansas without access to Scouting, but as his four sons started to reach elementary school age, he felt that Scouting with its unique mix of outdoor skills, fun, leadership and values was important to our development and all four of us joined Cub Scouts and stayed active through attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. Four Eagle Scout brothers is not a record, but it’s not bad!
I am a Brotherhood Member of the Order of the Arrow and have been an active adult Scouter for over 20 years. Cub Scouts, Webelos, Boy Scouts – I have enjoyed active involvement in all of them, as my three sons have participated in what I consider to be the finest youth program on the planet. My two older sons, Will and Greg, are both Eagle Scouts and my 13 year old son, Andrew, will sit for his Life Scout board of review in the next couple months.
As an adult Scouter I have been a Webelo den leader, assistant Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster, Jamboree staffer and Jamboree Scoutmaster, troop committee chairman of a 100 Scout troop and active on the executive board/executive committee of the Longhorn Council for 19 years culminating as President of the council. I am also Wood Badge trained and have served on Wood Badge staff.
As I mentioned, I have served on the NESA Committee for 9 years. I also serve on the National Boy Scout Committee and the National Scouting Museum Committee. Scouting is my passion and forms the core of how I like to spend my time outside family, church and work.
This is the most exciting time for NESA in the last 20 years. Thanks to the Harris Connect National Eagle Scout Directory initiative we have over 57,000 new NESA members! If you are a new member, or an inactive older member, we hope that we will be able to increase awareness of the myriad of opportunities to be involved in the Boy Scouts of America.
My wife Melinda and I have a daughter in addition to our three sons and we are active in our church and our children’s schools. I work in the energy business – mostly natural gas exploration and development. I am an entrepreneur and own/co-own several businesses, including Adexco Production Company and Texas Shale Gas Resources, LLC.
